How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs Down There

Let’s face it. When it comes to grooming the southern region, everyone has their own program. Some still rock the 80’s fro. Others go fully clean. Or somewhere in between.  And this topic isn’t discussed frequently enough. At UNO we are all about breaking down walls so this article will do just that: provide a candid breakdown of best practices for optimizing your most precious bodily region. Specifically for those who prefer to keep it clean (which their partners also appreciate).

  1. Length: If it’s been a while, make sure to trim before you shave cleanly. If you attack this project with a straight razor after weeks of non-shaving, your razor will have to work too hard to get the job done and your skin will pay the price. This is especially true if you are still using a multi-blade razor as hair will get clogged in between the blades and make your shave less efficient.

  2. Cadence: Everyone’s hair grows at a different rate. It’s important to figure out the best cadence for yourself personally, whether it be every other day or once a week. The reason why this is important is, when clean shaving, you want to be sure your hair isn’t too long, requiring your razor to do too much work and leaving your skin irritated. I spent years figuring this out but am now a once/twice a week guy, am always smooth and haven’t experienced razor burn, ingrown hairs or any southern irritation for the last year, in which I got this really dialed in.

  3. Location: The shower is the only place to this job. Warm water will prep the skin and remove friction as you shave. Use your favorite shaving cream or conditioner and get it smooth, baby.

  4. Grain: This is by far one of the most important pieces. Multi-blade razor companies have told us that grain doesn’t matter and the multi-blades shave well in any direction, with the closest shave being against the grain. This is (one of) the biggest loads of BS that we have gotten from big razor companies. When you’re down south: SHAVE WITH THE GRAIN. Not only will it get you as clean as you need to get, you will not get ingrown hairs or rubbing irritation when you put on your jeans, a tight belt and do something active. That problem is a result of shaving TOO close, under the skin, with a multi-blade razor

  5. Blade: If you’re reading this, you probably already know that you only get two things from multi-blade razors: a sub-par shave and a smaller bank account balance. Ditch the multi-blade razor and take care of this job with an UNO single-blade cartridge razor. It's the best tool for all regions and for your bank account.

Put these tips into play and you (and your partner) will not regret it.
